a Holiday Greeting from
the Mario Lemieux Foundation
Please support the cancer research and patient care initiatives of the Mario Lemieux Foundation.
2017 was another great year for the Mario Lemieux Foundation! We continued our work to support cancer research and patient care initiatives as well as enjoyed another Pittsburgh Penguins Back-to-Back Stanley Cup Championship!
The team’s accomplishments on the ice serve as inspiration for the Foundation to continue to achieve our goals in the community. From funding research for difficult to treat cancers to providing Austin’s Playrooms in area medical facilities for children and families, the Lemieux Foundation strives each and every day to give others a chance to win!
The Mario Lemieux Foundation was created in 1993 with a mission of finding a cure for cancer. As a 25-year cancer survivor, I understand the importance of turning adversity into philanthropy. Our commitment is to blood cancer research and patient care. We have ongoing projects at the Mario Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center and at the Mario Lemieux Lymphoma Center for Children and Young Adults at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
In 2000, my wife Nathalie expanded the Foundation’s scope by establishing Austin’s Playrooms, an initiative that creates playrooms for children and families in medical facilities. After opening three new playrooms in 2017, we have 36 Austin’s Playrooms, a number far exceeding any goal Nathalie and I had when the first playroom recipient, Magee-Womens Hospital, was named almost 18 years ago.
We are very excited for 2018, as we will celebrate the Foundation’s 25th Anniversary! Nathalie and I are planning some exciting ways to celebrate this milestone, including announcing a new program that will gift $250,000 to charities in western Pennsylvania that support children and families in our community. We also look forward to acknowledging people like you who have supported this Foundation over the last 25 years
As you celebrate this holiday season, Nathalie and I ask that you consider a year-end donation to support the Mario Lemieux Foundation. Funds will help continue our important research projects and expand the reach of Austin’s Playrooms.
Happy holidays, and thank you for your support!
The Mario Lemieux Foundation continued funding projects at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center. We also opened three new Austin’s Playrooms in 2017:
- UPMC Outpatient Center – Hampton
- The Western Pennsylvania Hospital NICU Step-Down/Pediatrics Unit
- Children’s Hospital North
In addition to our three new playrooms, your donations helped us to renovate 15 other existing Austin’s Playrooms!
In celebration of the Mario Lemieux Foundation’s 25th Anniversary, we will share inspirational stories throughout the year about how the Foundation has given others a chance to win over the past 25 years! We also plan to:
- Announce a new Mario Lemieux Foundation Community Grant program, donating $250,000 to local charities — details will be announced soon
- Implement a new planned giving program, including our Society 66 Legacy Society
- Celebrate with other surprises throughout 2018, including Lemieux Foundation Anniversary events
