2007 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
Presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield
Laurel Valley Golf Club
June 27-28, 2007
The Mario Lemieux Foundation was proud to have Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield take over the presenting sponsorship of the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational in 2007. For the second straight year, the golf event was held at the exclusive Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, PA and was closed to the public.

The star power was as strong as ever, as Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, Ben Roethlisberger, Steve Spurrier, Dan Marino, Lou Holtz, Lynn Swann and a field of 35 celebrities played with Pro-Am groups on Wednesday, June 27. Presenting sponsor Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield enjoyed six Pro-Am groups, including pairings with Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, and Marcus Allen. The team of Heinz and Grant Fuhr edged out Dan Marino’s team from Accenture to win the first-place team trophy.

The Thursday pairings included Dan Marino, Steve Spurrier, and Jamie Dixon with Highmark, Lynn Swann with Mellon Financial Corporation, and Jim McMahon with Great-West Health Care. Pierre Larouche and his team from Duquesne Light took home the first-place Pro-Am prize.

The final day of the MLCI was the second annual celebrity-only event that pitted Team Lemieux against defending champion Team Larouche in a Ryder Cup style face-off. After winning nine of the possible 15 points in the individual morning matches, Team Lemieux held on beat Team Larouche by a final score of 12 ˝ to 10 ˝ to etch their name on the Lemieux Celebrity Challenge trophy for the first time.

Thank you to all the sponsors that once again made this a tremendously successful event and helped to raise significant funds for the cancer and neonatal research projects of the Mario Lemieux Foundation!

2006 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
Laurel Valley Golf Club
June 28-30, 2006
2006 was a year of change for the Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. For the first time, the exclusive celebrity golf event was held at the spectacular Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, PA and was closed to the public. The new format allowed for a more intimate environment for sponsors and celebrities alike.

Mario Lemieux, Dan Marino, Ben Roethlisberger, Charles Barkley, Brett Hull, Emmitt Smith, Sidney Crosby, and a field of 33 celebrities played with Pro-Am groups on Wednesday, June 28. Title sponsor Mellon Financial Corporation fielded seven groups, including the Pro-Am team winner led by Ben Roethlisberger and the second place team led by Mario Lemieux.

The Thursday pairings included former Vice President Dan Quayle with Mellon Financial Corporation, Dan Marino with Toyota, Sidney Crosby with Highmark, and Mario Lemieux with a group from Accenture. Tie Domi and Great-West Health Care took home the first place team trophy.

Friday, June 30 was a celebrity-only event that pitted two teams, one led by host Mario Lemieux and one led by defending champion Pierre Larouche, against each other in a Ryder Cup style showdown. After the morning round, Team Lemieux found itself ahead by two points after the Mark Rypien/Clark Gillies and Jordan Staal/Eddie Johnston teams were each able to score two points in the team matches. But in the individual matches in the afternoon, Team Larouche took 9 _ points from the possible 16 to overtake Team Lemieux by a final score of 16 _ to 15 _ and win the celebrity-only portion of the 2006 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational.

2005 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
A feeling of excitement came over The Club at Nevillewood for the 2005 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. The eighth edition of the Tournament would mark the final year the event would take place at Nevillewood and be open to the public. But over the next four days, the Tournament would offer all of the celebrity competition and thrills that have helped it raise almost $7.5 million for cancer and neonatal research. John Elway, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Ben Roethlisberger returned, as well as Tournament newcomers including talk show host Carson Daly, Sportscenter anchor Dan Patrick, former NFL star Bruce Smith and Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Antwaan Randle El.

Thursday featured the celebrity/sponsor pairings of Mario Lemieux with Accenture, Michael Jordan with title sponsor Mellon Financial Corporation and John Elway with a group from Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort. The first place Pro-Am team prize went to former Penguins coach Eddie Johnston and Simmons Business Systems as they edged Mike Eruzione and his team from Northside Foods by eight points.

The second day of the Pro-Am also marked the first day celebrity scores counted toward the $220,000 purse. Former Super Bowl MVP Mark Rypien and his team from Mellon Financial Corporation took home the team prize while a number of celebrities jumped to the top of the round one leaderboard. Chris Chandler shot an opening round 68 for a +27 point total and a one-point lead heading into the weekend. A familiar competitor took control of the event on Saturday. Four-time Lemieux champion Rick Rhoden posted a second round 70 for a two-day total of +50. Chandler sat one point behind while defending champion Pierre Larouche was only three points back.

Saturday was also highlighted by the Levitra Celebrity Long Drive Contest, which showcased the long ball abilities of 15 celebrity participants including Kyle Boller, Dan Marino, Jeremy Roenick and Jim McMahon. In the end, Billy Joe Tolliver edged out Andy Van Slyke for the title and donated his $10,000 prize to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

The stage was set for another exciting finish as five players, including John Elway and Mark Rypien, were within five points of the lead. Michael Jordan and Billy Joe Tolliver each posted impressive scores of +24 points while Tommy Maddox climbed into the top 20 with a round of +20. However, the championship came down to two men when Pierre Larouche drained a 10 foot putt on the 17th green to force a tie with Rick Rhoden heading to the final hole. On the 18th hole, Rhoden's approach shot went long, leaving the door open for Larouche. He took advantage by tapping in for par and a three-point victory to capture his second straight Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational.

2004 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
The 2004 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational welcomed celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment to The Club at Nevillewood on June 10-13. The Tournament once again reached its goal of raising over $1 million for the medical research projects of the Mario Lemieux Foundation and furthered its reputation as western Pennsylvania's premier fundraising and community event. Mario's friends Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino and Tommy Maddox were among those in attendance supporting the Foundation and entertaining the Pittsburgh crowds.

Thursday was the first day of Pro-Am play, where group scores are counted using the Modified Stableford Scoring System. Mario teed off with Mellon Financial Corporation, followed closely by Jordan and the UPMC group. The large gallery was delighted to see coaching legends and Lemieux newcomers Chuck Daly, Dave Wannstedt and Lou Holtz, as well as Steelers first round draft choice Ben Roethlisberger. Shane Rawley and Great-West Healthcare took home the first-place team prize for the day.

The weather was the story on day two. The morning groups, including defending champ Rick Rhoden and Accenture, were able to play most of their rounds, but play was suspended at noon. The rain continued and the afternoon tee times were cancelled. Dick Anderson and the group from KDKA were declared the pro-am winners, and the celebrity portion of the Invitational would be shortened to a 36-hole event.

Play resumed Saturday morning with the start of the celebrity tournament. There were great pairings throughout the course, led by the comedic threesome of Charles Barkley, Vince Coleman and Tom Dreesen and the all-star group of Mario, Michael Jordan, and Tommy Maddox. Local favorite and Nevillewood resident Pierre Larouche fired a first round +24, only one point back of the leader, former NHL all-star Bernie Nicholls. Former Lemieux Champion Jack Wagner shot +20, and Rollie Fingers sat in a tie for fourth at +22.

Saturday was also a successful first day for the group of Nathalie Lemieux, Missie Berteotti, and Karen Jansen. All three women played two exhibition rounds and shot extremely low scores. Missie, a LPGA professional, and Karen, a golf instructor and wife of Dan Jansen, were near the top of the leaderboard both days of the competition.

Play began Sunday morning under the threat of more rain. Fortunately, the weather held off, allowing for a wonderful final day of golf. Some of the highlighted threesomes included: Pittsburgh Penguins Jay Caufield, Eddie Olczyk, and Craig Patrick; Charles Barkley, Emmitt Smith, and Marcus Allen; and Mario, John Congemi, and Dan Marino.

At the top of the leaderboard, Steve Bartkowski shot an early +24 to shoot up the standings. But the final threesome of Nicholls, Larouche and Shane Rawley would decide the winner. Since Nicholls and Rawley both fell down the leaderboard with +10 and +12 respectively, the door was open for Larouche. The former Penguin, who had always wanted to win Mario's event on his home course since its inception in 1998, was up to the challenge. He shot a final round +22 to win the 2004 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. Congratulations Pierre!

2003 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
For the sixth consecutive year, The Club at Nevillewood played host to the Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. Mario welcomed back tournament regulars Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, John Elway and Emmitt Smith, but was also excited to add first-time celebrities Joe Pesci (Goodfellas, My Cousin Vinny), John O'Hurley (Seinfeld), Alfonso Ribeiro (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox to the impressive field. Also for the first time, the event would be played under the Modified Stableford Scoring System, where points are awarded for low scores.

The Tournament kicked-off early Thursday morning with the traditional 7:30 tee time of KDKA-TV's Bob Pompeani and the Mario Lemieux Foundation group. The celebrity and sponsor foursomes were fighting for the daily team titles, also under the Modified Stableford Scoring System. The afternoon tee times featured Mario Lemieux with Mellon Financial Corporation and Tommy Maddox teeing it up with a group from Toyota. The competition was intense, but the team of Stan Humphries and Owens & Minor took home the first-place Pro-Am prize.

Friday marked the start of the 54-hole celebrity tournament and day two of the Pro-Am competition. Joe Pesci was not only a hit with the large gallery, but he also made a splash on the course as his team from GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals collected a score of +48 (57) to win the team competition. Three-time Lemieux champ Rick Rhoden - who started the day by chipping in for eagle on the par 4 10th hole - paced the field with a score of +26 (69) to establish a three-point lead over former NFL quarterback Steve Bartkowski. Pierre Larouche, Tommy Maddox, Michael Jordan and defending champion Jack Wagner all posted impressive first-day scores to stay within striking distance.

After a rain delay pushed all tee times back to noon on Saturday, the gallery took advantage of the improving weather and turned out in impressive numbers to support the Mario Lemieux Foundation. The featured group of Mario, Michael Jordan and Joe Pesci entertained the crowd like no other threesome could. Jack Wagner posted the round of the day (+26, 70) to pull within six points of Rhoden. Bartkowski retained his second place position, and Michael Jordan shot up the leaderboard into seventh place, as he was on track to post his best finish in Tournament history.

In front of over 20,000 spectators on Sunday, the Tournament featured inspired play and entertaining pairings. Charles Barkley, Alfonso Ribeiro and Emmitt Smith were paired together, as were Mario, John Elway and Dan Marino. But the championship came down to four men as Michael Jordan continued his superb play by shooting +22 (72) to finish in a tie for third with Stan Humphries. Jack Wagner made one final attempt to defend his title, but he would finish second to former major leaguer Rick Rhoden. Rhoden led wire-to-wire and, for the fourth time, was crowned champion of the Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational.

2002 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
Mario Lemieux welcomed back many friends and celebrities to celebrate the Fifth Anniversary of the Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. Names such as Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, John Elway, Dan Marino and Steve Spurrier have become synonymous with the event. New celebrities also took their first tour around The Club at Nevillewood. Canadian figure skaters David Pelletier and Jamie SalČ, NíSYNC member Chris Kirkpatrick, LPGA star Missie Berteotti, former NFL great Marcus Allen and Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan participated for the first time.

The celebration began Thursday morning in the midst of a steady rain. The morning tee times went off as scheduled, but the rain continued to come down harder as the day progressed. The morning groups could not complete their rounds, and the afternoon times were cancelled.

On Friday it was evident the bad weather had moved through, and the large crowds at The Club at Nevillewood began to arrive. Jack Wagner posted an impressive three-under par 69 to take the first round lead. But the trio of Shane Rawley, Bernie Nicholls and Billy Joe Tolliver positioned themselves for the weekend by shooting one-over par 73.

The weekend action was non-stop through Sunday afternoon. A number of players were able to make a run at the leaders as Wagner, Nicholls and Rawley all stumbled to second round 79ís. Former NBA star Truck Robinson fired a 70 to take the outright lead by one shot over former NFL quarterbacks Steve Bartkowski and Billy Joe Tolliver. Wagner sat three shots back heading into Sunday. Mario Lemieux, paired with Pierre Larouche and Clark Gillies, posted an impressive 74.

A crowd of almost 25,000, the largest in the five-year history of the Tournament, came out on Sunday to take in the final round. Rollie Fingers and Shane Rawley each posted exciting rounds of two-under par 70 to set the tone for the day. As expected, it came down to the final hole as Rick Rhoden, the defending champion, and Jack Wagner were tied at +1 on the tee at #18. But disaster struck for the former champ as he quadruple-bogeyed the hole. Wagner was able to take advantage as he birdied the hole to seal a three-shot victory over Steve Bartkowski. Jack Wagner posted the round of the Tournament, a four-under par 68, to win the 2002 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational.

2001 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational
The star power was stronger than ever as celebrities from sports and entertainment converged on The Club at Nevillewood for the 2001 Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational. Superstars Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Dan Marino and John Elway returned along with 2000 champion Dan Quinn. A field of newcomers also joined Mario on the links including Judd Nelson, Maury Povich, Leslie Nielsen, speedskater Dan Jansen and Penguins star Alexei Kovalev.

The Pro-Am kicked off Thursday morning as celebrities paired with sponsors to compete in a team format. Ulf Samuelsson and the group from North Side Foods took home the team prize. The first of two hole-in-ones occurred Thursday morning when Rick Murray, playing with Jerry Lucas and the KDKA group, scored an ace on the 17th hole and won a 2001 Toyota Spider.

The Pro-Am continued on Friday and was also the first day celebrity rounds counted toward their overall score. Defending champ Dan Quinn picked up where he left off last year, shooting a 4-under par 68, good for a one-shot lead heading into the weekend. Jack Wagner and former NFL tight-end Brian Kinchen each put themselves in great position by shooting 69. Jim McMahon and a threesome from UPMC Health System won the team competition.

The Saturday pairings featured the all-star threesom Michael Jordan, Dan Marino and Charles Barkley. The huge gallery enjoyed the antics of the celebrities, but low scores were hard to come by, as only Shane Rawley was able to break par. His 2-under par 70 was good enough for a two shot lead over Quinn. Johnny Bench and Wagner were three back, and Al Del Greco and Rick Rhoden were in the hunt, only four shots back.

There were many spectacular performances on Sunday as seven golfers posted scores of par or better. The Hall of Fame trio of Mario, Jordan and John Elway attracted the largest crowds, but the day clearly belonged to Rick Rhoden. Rhoden mastered The Club at Nevillewood with a blistering 67, including a birdie on the 18th hole to seal the victory. For the third time in four years, Rick Rhoden is the champion of the Mellon Mario Lemieux brtational.
