Mario Lemieux Hodgkin's disease is a specialized form of lymphoma. Lymphomas are cancers that develop in the lymph system, part of the body's immune system. Hodgkin's disease represents approximately eight percent of all lymphoma, and is considered one of the most curable forms of cancer. The five-year survival rate is 81 percent today; the survival rate in 1960 was only 40 percent. Treatment for Hodgkin's disease includes both radiation and chemotherapy.

"As I went through the treatments for Hodgkin's disease in the winter of 1993, I began to realize how fragile life can be. I felt that I had to give something back to the community, and this is when I decided to form the Lemieux Foundation."
